Maps, Geography, and Communities |
Your child is currently learning about communities in Social Studies. So far we have discussed important elements a community needs to be successful such as a place for people to: work, play, live, learn, and eat. We have also learned about the three different types of communities: urban, rural, and suburban. We have been exploring the differences between the three focusing on living spaces, green spaces, transportation, and the proximity of the buildings and houses. Additionally we have discussed unique cultural and natural feature of each type of community and your child had a chance to show me their understanding of this by creating a project on scratch.
This coming week your child will be working in a small group to create a map of either rural, urban, or suburban community using their knowledge of it's features. The more focused your child is the more time they will have to add cool features to their map. Then they will have the opportunity to program an ozobot to travel through their community.
By the end of the unit your child will have the opportunity to create a map of one of the types of communities being sure to include it's important elements. Then, they will have a chance to program a ozobot (a small robot) to travel along the roads in his or her community!!! They will have the opportunity to present this work at the STEAM/Science fair in April.
